Medomak Valley High School P. 0. Box 309 320 Manktown Road Waldoboro, Maine 04572 December 7, 1993 To whom It may concern: May I recommend to you for your consideration Katherine Watier, a National Honor Society member, State of Maine 4-H honored student, and member of the Class of 1994 of Medomak Valley High School. I have worked with Kathy in a student/teacher relationship for the past three years. Presently she serves as activities section editor for the Valley Echo yearbook of which I am advisor. I have also served as a school-based mentor for her as she has led the STEP (Students Towards Environmental Protection) group during the past two years. Ours is a relationship built on respect for one another's strengths and interests. Kathy is one of the most ambitious young women I have taught over the past twenty-seven years. She constantly sets goals and moves with dispatch and a methodical approach to achieve them. I have observed her use of brainstorming, composing, editing and revising not only in her written pieces but also as she has created a strong environmental activities group, met her 4-H goals and completed oral or creative projects in conjunction with school subjects. She is a very strong leader, a plus for most situations; and in those situations where she has overpowered her peers, she has learned to step back, evaluate, make concessions and move on with the good of the group in mind, I find this a most mature characteristic for a teenager; yet, it does not evoke surprise in me where Kathy is concerned. She is one of a kind and very special. Does Kathy excel in everything? No, and she'd be the first to admit this. Is she a perfectionist? No, but she does give 110% of herself to her endeavors and hopes for equal commitment in others. Do I see herconfining herself only to a career and family in the future? Absolutely not, Kathy is an activist and will always seek involvement with the communities in which she exists, locally and globally. She's a thinker and a doer, and if she doesn't know the answers to her questions, she finds a way to obtain them. Kathy has been given a very supportive family environment in which to grow over the years. Creativity, self-starting, responsible action and goal setting have been a natural part of her life and have shown in her approach to her school work and activities. She's quick to admit to her faults or shortcomings. I don't find her making excuses, I would expect her parents to continue their support of her in her goals and commitments as she moves into higher education settings. |
