To Whom It May Concern:

It is with honor and pleasure that I recommend Katherine Watier for the college of her choice. I have known and worked with Kathy over the past seven years in the 4-H program. Kathy has worked with me on several 4-H projects. I also have been one of Kathy's advisors in the 4-H Future Leaders Club over the past two years.

Kathy is a gifted student and is capable of accomplishing any goals or dreams that she has. Her talents in dance and acting have been integrated in many activities that she has done in 4-H. She uses these talents to enhance concepts creatively, which people embrace enthusiastically. The most recent project that illustrates this is the creative dance about rain forests that she and some other 4-H members designed. This dance is one part of their rain forest presentation.

Another gift that Kathy has is her ability to work with people of all ages. Kathy shines when she is with a group of people. She has that unusual quality to gather a group together to accomplish a task. I have seen her do this at 4-H county events, 4-H teen conferences and with other adults, including myself. Her enthusiasm and love for life is contagious.

Kathy exhibits outstanding leadership skills. She is not afraid to tackle any project. Examples of her leadership abilities include: starting a 4-H teen club and coordinating it on her own for the first year 1990-present); creating and organizing a school group, Students Towards Environmental Protection (1991-present); coordinator of the Midcoast 4-H Teen Conference (1990) and key planner for teen conferences in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Her efforts have resulted in a well-established 4-H regional teen club; an active environmental school group that educates school children and adults about the rain forest and other environmental issues; and annual teen conferences (these regional conferences will expand to include the entire state in 1994).

Kathy has grown up in a rural community that doesn't have many opportunities unless you create them. She has indeed made opportunities to hone her skills and talents in leadership and the arts. She has found ways to help the community and work globally using local resources. Finances are oftentimes tight in her family, but she has sought out funding through 4-H scholarships, 4-H creativity grants, and fund raising.

Kathy has easily given over 50 hours of community service to the 4-H and other projects. She has coordinated and helped plan the 4-H Teen Conference. Last year she helped with logistics, including arranging rooms, scheduling, and meal planning. She also taught a dance workshop. At the Union Fair, she volunteered many times over the course of the week to help

manage the 4-H Exhibition Hall. She also was part of the group that spent time painting and fixing up the hall. She also has given many hours to the local community center. The board members are delighted to have a responsible young person that they can count on and trust.

Kathy has received awards and scholarships for her accomplishments. Among them, she received a county medal and state award for her 4-H rain forest project. She attended 4-H Conference in April 1993 in recognition of her leadership capabilities. She is one of four students nationwide on the Planning Committee for National 4-H Conference, 1994 (The first 4-H'er in Maine to be selected). She also received a scholarship to attend 4-H World Focus at the National 4-H Center in July 1992. She has used much of the information presented there to enhance her rain forest project.

Kathy's two most outstanding accomplishments are: establishing a 4-H teen club and an annual 4-H teen conference and creating a student organization that has helped her accomplish the goals set forth in her 4-H rain forest project. She now is working with several students giving class presentations, developing curriculum, and helping other groups in several states get involved in this rain forest project.

Kathy would be a valuable asset to any college or university. Please do not hesitate to call me if you need more information.

Sincerely,
